CODE VLM VOLUMISING LENGTHENING MASCARA* | REVIEW

I’m back with the never-ending quest for my favourite mascara. I’ve been around the block mascara-wise, and although I don’t have seven currently on-the-go like I do with foundations, I feel like I’m closing in on the best mascara for me. I’ve tried the big boys; Too Faced Better Than Sex and Urban Decay’s Perversion. I’ve tried the cheaper boys; NYX More To Love. And I’ve had a fair old go at the utter shite boys; *cough cough* L’Oreal Paradise Extatic *cough*. So when I was asked by the girls at CODE Beautiful if I’d like to give their VLM Volumising Lengthening Mascara a try, it’s safe to say I was keeeeen.

LIZ EARLE DEEP CLEANSING MASK REVIEW

How do you even start a beauty blog post any more?

“Hello, and welcome back to my blog!”
“Look what IIIIIIIIII’ve goooooottttt!”
“Wagwan bitches, check this out”

It’s been ages since I just wrote a beauty review, which is what I started this bloody blog for in the first place. I’m feeling like I do want to get back to basics a little bit. I felt my blog getting a bit confused over the last year; I had sooo much content I wanted to put in - university, travelling, food, eating out - that I ended up barely covering anything. If JasmineMcRae was supposed to be a beauty blog, it was literally the worst beauty blog on the face of the earth because I honestly think I only wrote a total of about three paragraphs on makeup or skincare this year, all in all. I felt so far removed from being a ‘beauty blogger’, and my identity as a blogger got a bit muddled. And I’d really like to know what in the heck is going on with my blog, my YouTube, my Instagram, etc etc etc. So, here we are with an  a c t u a l  beauty review on the Liz Earle Deep Cleansing Mask. *Gasp!*

MY AUTUMN FAVOURITES

Hasn’t it been a bloody miserable autumn? I can’t remember the last time I saw a blue sky, wasn’t getting drizzled on, or being able to leave my front door without 72million layers on. But even though I’m practically overdosing on my Vitamin D supplements and adding various UV therapy lights to my Amazon basket, this time of year is definitely my favourite for makeup. I can never resist a dark and moody lipstick, or a taupe smokey eye, and I love that autumn allows you to go a bit spookier than you usually would. I’ve chosen a few of my favourite autumnal makeup bits; products I’ve been reaching for lots over the last couple of months to try to inject a bit of warmth into these sub-zero, wet, foggy November days...

UNIVERSITY WAS NOT THE BEST EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE

For loads of people (friends and family included), university is the most exciting and rewarding time in someone’s life. You learn who you really are, test your independence, teach yourself to cook, party like a nutter and make the friends you’ll keep forever. You’re told to look forward to it, and you do. I stressed out about my exam results, hoping they’d be good enough to get me into the university I wanted. The application process was so fun and daunting. Emails about courses and open days were flooding into my Gmail and I was so excited to move out into a big city and start my new life as a student.

But as I sit here typing this blog post, just four months after graduating with First Class Honours in Journalism, I’m looking back and feeling a bit disappointed with the whole university experience…

THE RISE OF THE INSTA-BLOGGERS

What’s happened to blogging?

I used to look forward to taking photos, editing them, writing reviews and promoting my blog posts every week, but lately my motivation has dwindled down to pretty much zilch. Even my favourite bloggers are posting to their blogs less and less, and that only feeds into my feelings of laziness, mehhhh, and “what’s the bleeding point, anyway?”. My Sunday mornings used to be dedicated to swigging tea, scrolling through my newsletters and catching up on my favourite creators’ content. Sure, there are hundreds of blog posts going live every day, but these aren’t coming from those who have been passionate about the creating process for years. There are loads of articles that are just churned out thoughtlessly uploaded, with OK-ish photos and less-than-perfect reviews or how-tos. But now I’m lucky to find a new blog post (that’s worth reading) more than once a week, from the many bloggers I absolutely love to follow. Where have you all gone???

VENICE

After a relatively whack night’s sleep in our cheap Slovenian hostel (which involved being locked out of our shared bathroom and having to go for a wazz in the shower cubicle), we arose at 6am and made our way to the train station to make our way to Venice! So far, we’d hit Croatia, Budapest, Vienna and Ljubljana, and now it was time to revisit my favourite city in the whole entire world; Venice…

COVERAGE VS SERUM | THE ORDINARY FOUNDATION REVIEW

I’m never late in real life. I turn up to work half an hour early so I can take Instagram stories of me pulling faces at the hideous prospect of working. I’m always early at a restaurant so I can check the menu and decide what I’m having before my mates turn up and distract me from my one true love (food). But for some reason, I’m always about a year late to the makeup hype. Deciem’s The Ordinary brand popped up on our Instagram feeds and had everyone noticing, gasping, and practically weeping with joy and excitement. But for some reason it’s taken me until now to bring their Serum Foundation and their Coverage Foundation home to mumma…

MY RESPONSE TO A SHITTY BLOGGING TWEET

A few months ago I saw a tweet by a blogger that I follow that really wound me up. I’ve been wanting to write a response to it for ages, but I didn’t know if it would be too obvious, and I certainly didn’t want to @ her publicly. But it was a really shitty tweet, and one that I’ve not been able to completely forget. So, I wanted to respond and give my 2 cents on the matter (or my 10 quid, because I’m having a vent after about 6 months of being pissed off with it).

The tweeter in question is a really lovely girl who lives in the North of England and she writes really great beauty and lifestyle content. I’ve been following her on Insta and Twitter for a good few years now, and while I wouldn’t say we were ‘blogger friends’, but I'm sure that we know of each other and I often comment and like her posts on her various social platforms. I love catching up on her blog, so even though I'm writing this post, it's not an attack. It's just an example of something I see in the blogging community a LOT, and I wanted to give my honest response...

VIENNA + LJUBLJANA

It’s time to tell you all about Part 3 of our Interrailing adventure, which takes place in Vienna and ThatPlaceIStillCan’tPronounce! So far, we’ve had a week on a yacht in Croatia (blog post here / vlog here) and three days in beautiful Budapest (blog post here / vlog here). Now it’s time to take on the land of Weiner Lager - no joke - and climb a million miles up a bloody mountain to a castle on Chris’s birthday…

PEGGY PORSCHEN REVIEW

If I haven’t already bored you to tears with my last few Instagram pictures, then I’d like to bombard you (again) with more baby-pink than could ever be necessary, and review my trip to Peggy Porschen Cakes.

After visiting, and falling in love with, Saint Aymes in Marble Arch (blog post here), I decided that I’d like to start conquering all the Instagrammable places around London. It’s a hub for OTT restaurants and extra shop-fronts, so I’m making it my mission.
Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll probably have seen or heard of Peggy Porschen. It’s a bakery/cafe near Victoria Train Station, with a pastel pink exterior and a huge floral arch over the door.

BUDAPEST

Helló, and welcome to part two of our European adventure! This time I’m going to bore you to death regale you with tales from Budapest, Hungary. This city was definitely one of our favourites from the whole trip, with more kebabs, avant-garde bars and boiling weather than you can shake a stick at (do people really shake sticks at things? If so, I would like to meet these people).

After recovering from the food poisoning incident in Split, Croatia (read my Croatia blog post first, if you haven’t already!), we braved the 14-hour overnight train and arrived in Budapest at around 8:30am…

CROATIA

And so begins the round-up of the last month of my life! I’m having to accept that I’m a bit of a living cliche; I graduated from university in July and promptly went off travelling to, like, tOOOtally find myself (or to avoid getting a grown-up job for at least another month). You will probably have seen some Instagram posts that I spent far too long on, interspersed with a bunch of half-arsed Instagram stories, and they may have given you a vague idea as to where on the continent I was.

I’ve had this interrail trip planned for about a year. I’ve wanted to go around Europe ever since I moved back to the UK, and finally found a unsuspecting victim willing partner, my boyfriend Chris, to make the trip with me.   And so, we started saving up our pennies and roughly mapping routes and looking at potential hostels. We eventually settled on a plan and worked on scraping the funds together. It felt like f o r e v e r waiting for the 21st of July to come around, but it finally did.

So without further ado, here’s a roundup of my time in Croatia...

A BAND MERCH PHOTOSHOOT WITH HEARTH

Of all the girls in the world a band could choose to model their new merch, my boyfriend’s band managed to choose the shortest and most uncoordinated one. Me.

If you’ve been following this blog or my YouTube channel for a while, you’ll probably have ‘met’ my boyfriend Chris! He’s been in Hearth, a post-hardcore band based in London, for a couple of years and they’ve recently started playing live shows. Now the live shows have started, the original Hearth t-shirt became really popular.

BRUNCHING IN A TINY VILLAGE IN DEVON

I found myself down in Devon this weekend, visiting the ‘rents and getting a little bit of sea-breezy relief from hayfever. I grew up in a tiny seaside town called Teignmouth, which is right on the coast and full of exciting things like charity shops and pubs [insert raised eyebrows here]. It’s very very quaint, and very picturesque, but after living in London for two years, it seems like there’s not very much to do. After having a go at the ol’ faithfuls; crazy golf, a walk along the beach and a pint in the pub, I decided I wanted to try finding a good brunch spot. I’ve become absolutely obsessed with brunch lately, and I decided it would be nice to explore some cafés so I can have my fix when I’m down in Devon again.

KAT VON D EVERLASTING LIQUID LIPSTICK COLLECTION + SWATCHES

I’d originally planned to write this blog post up a few weeks ago, but Kat Von D very selfishly decided to out herself as an anti-vaxxer the very same week. I was going to scrap the blog post, but I actually (as much as it pains me to say it) a d o r e  Kat Von D’s Everlasting Liquid Lipstick collection and I will definitely still be using her products. My KVD Beauty liquid lipstick collection is made up of three shades so far; Bow N Arrow, Sanctuary and Damned.

I buy my Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick from Debenhams. I’ve ordered a couple online, but managed to find an actual stand in-store on Oxford Street last year, so I could try them out and find a good colour in person. They are £17 and come in about a bazillion shades; nudes, reds, pinks and also some blues, greens, a grey and an amazing jet-black.

TOO FACED CHOCOLATE GOLD PALETTE REVIEW + SWATCHES

It’s about time I write a bloody blog post, then, isn’t it? This was actually my Easter present, so I am super late reviewing this, but #Y0L0, #$WAG etc. Because neither me or my sister are really keen on chocolate, my family created a now long-standing tradition where we get a easter ‘themed’ present, rather than a big ol’ choccie egg that’ll go mouldy before I get around to it.

OUT FOR LUNCH AT CAU | SPRING OOTD

Primark Sunglasses // Boohoo Crop T Shirt // SilkFred Pinafore Dress // Topshop Fishnet Socks // Boohoo Mini Tote Bag // Vans Old Skool Shoes

Waddup. Ya Girl got dressed and left the house! I’d be spewing a pack of lies if I told you the last few weeks of my life have been easy. The final deadlines for university are virtually incarcerating me in my flat, and I genuinely feel like Will from the Inbetweeners when he doesn’t know if ‘council’ is a word anymore or not. But I’ve only got one more to go, and so Chris and I went for a (slightly premature) victory lunch. I’m sure there will be another celebration after my final deadline on the 24th of May, and hopefully it’ll involve bees because I literally can’t remember the last time some sweet sweet rosé passed my lips. But anyway, here’s what I wore to CAU for my delish lunch…

This SilkFred pinafore dress was the star of the show; people on Instagram were loving it. I bought it for autumn thinking it’d be a slightly different colour, but I’ve been reaching for it a lot since the weather’s turned warmer. It’s some kind of faux-suede material, so it’s really soft, and the cross-back straps are comfy and adjustable. It only cost £18, which I think is pretty darn good, and I picked mine up in a size 8.

I styled it with a cropped t shirt from Boohoo which is currently sold out but there’s loads of similar ones on the website. Some Topshop fishnet socks, my good ol’ Primanarni sunglasses (which I’m pretty sure are Ray-Ban dupes but only cost £2) and my new fave mini tote bag from Boohoo. It’d be rude not to show you what I had for my v. extra lunch too, so here it is…

Lots of love,
Jasmine x

SHEIN SWIMWEAR TRY-ON HAUL + REVIEW

There are some age-old questions that constantly plague my mind. What came first; the chicken or the egg? Why won’t Leonardo DiCaprio realise he loves me? And is SHEIN a scam? I’ve spent hours of my life watching SHEIN, Romwe and Zaful hauls, trying to decide whether to spend my money with them. A lot of the videos are hit and miss; the sizing seems off, the material is cheap, or the item turns up completely different from the pictures.

I’ve never managed to reach a conclusion from the countless videos and reviews I’ve watched, so I decided to splash some ca$$$h and see for myself. Now, I haven’t bought any swimwear since my TRIANGL bikinis, and I’m going round Europe this year, so I really needed some fresh cozzies to strut around in. I checked Zaful, Romwe and SHEIN, and the cheapest options were on SHEIN, so I placed my order.

PORTSMOUTH

With all this glorious summery weather, I’ve been dying to take a little trip somewhere, escape the big smoke and get some pretty pics for the ‘gram. I’ve actually had this weekend trip to Portsmouth booked off from work for aaaaages, but it would seem that in order to get a weekend off from my pub job, one is required to make a blood oath with the devil and sacrifice their first-born child. Chris’s family are lucky enough to have a little sailing boat, and this was my first trip out on it. The trip ended in disaster (more on that later), but I had a lovely couple of days and I thought I’d share a few pictures from the weekend with you…

24CT GOLD UNICORN LATTES AT SAINT AYMES

Extra! Extra! Read all about it! Except, in this case, the ‘extra’ refers to Saint Aymes near Marble Arch tube station, and its drool-inducing pastel coloured 24ct gold unicorn lattes. Within a mere 16hrs of stumbling across this insta-worthy cafe on Instagram, I was stood in its doorway and trying to hold in the squeals. I’m aaaaaall one for splashing over £16 on two coffees if it means I can pose by some pretty flowers and eat an actual piece of gold for the first time. My boyfriend, on the other hand, is not so inclined. However, after he pinged me over a tenner with the transfer reference saying “£10 for one coffee FFS”, I think he secretly enjoyed it.

LAVENDER HAIR TRANSFORMATION @ PINK SAYS

Not a year goes by where I don’t make a huge cock-up with a box of at-home bleach. It does my nut to see other girls able to bleach their hair at home, not only saving themselves money but also blatantly rubbing their incredible talents right in my face. At least once a year, I decide I CAN bleach my hair at home. *Spoiler* I can't. And then I end up with orange roots. And THEN I book an appointment with my amazing and trusty hairdresser Katy in my Devon hometown, hop on the train and beg for her forgiveness.

I wandered into Pink Says in Teignmouth with what can only be described as a stunning two-tone orange and blonde bird’s nest. But, no fear, because Katy has fixed many of my home-hairdressing faux pas (I promise I wont do it again!), and she’s always been able to right my wrongs.

WE'RE GOING TRAVELLING!

I’ve been soooo excited to write this blog post for a couple of months now. I’m actually dying a tiny bit because I’m fiiiinally going to be going on a trip that I’ve been dreaming of going on for years! Chris and I are going to be setting off to explore Europe this summer. And we’ve bought our outward flights! We’ve spent quite a bit of time organising things so far. All the boring number-crunching, hotel-finding and, for me, conducting all-important ‘what food are we gonna eat while we’re away?’ research. Wanna see where we’re off to?

A LITTLE ROSE GOLD HOMEWARE HAUL

It’s a momentous…moment. I’d like to thank not only my parents, but also Jesus. Finally, after 5 long years of blogging, I can finally say that I’m a fully-fledged blogger because…I OWN ROSE GOLD KITCHENWARE. I’ve been lusting after a new kettle since Chris and I moved into our flat in Blackheath, because our Morphy Richards kettle broke during the move. We were having to precariously balance the sugar caddy on the lever, which made making teas and coffees a bit of a ball ache.

It was a case of balancing the caddy, wandering off to go to the loo, and then dashing back to the kitchen, pants still down, after hearing the boiling water splashing all over the counter. Chris, being a complete and utter MAN, said that “we didn’t need a new kettle because ours still worked fine”. Well, I say that he’s a cretin, and I deserved a new kettle…and some bits to go with it…

MAKEUP OF THE DAY + LUNCH @ CAFÉ ROUGE

Tuesdays and Wednesdays are my ‘weekend’; they’re the days I get off from university and work, and therefore the days that I can get my face on, swank about going for lunch and pretend I’m not hideously poor and moody. If you ever catch me *NOT* on a Tues or Wed, chances are, you probably won’t recognise me because I’m hobbling about wrapped in a duvet, semi-comatose and on my way (under extreme duress) to slave away at school or work. So, when I do pull my finger out and feel a bit fierce, a blog post is definitely in order. It’s a bit of an eclectic post today, but here are my makeup details and a fillet steak from Café Rouge to wet ya appetite…

SALMON + BROCCOLI PENNE IN SKINNY TOMATO SAUCE

It’s that time of year again…the beautiful “oooOOOMFGSUMMERISAROUNDTHECORNERANDIFEELDISGUSTINGANDBLOATED” feeling has really got me these last couple of weeks. Chris and I have a fat old summer trip planned (blog post to come!) and I’m conscious of the short time we have to get sexy before we leave.

I performed the annual, heartbreaking ceremony of trying on last summer’s shorts last week. And let me tell you, the sight of me jumping around my bedroom trying to squeeze into them was UNATTRACTIVE. This led to me performing the annual and equally heartbreaking ceremony of furiously googling low-fat-low-calorie-low-satisfaction recipes. I found a couple of good ones, but I ended up sort of creating my own recipe that tastes really good and seems to be hella healthy.

Third year university has been an absolute breeze; first I hope out of bed at 6am and jump into the shower. I’ll make myself and Chris a coffee and apply my makeup while the cup cools down. I’ll swan about in the kitchen making a full English breakfast with fruit, yogurts, freshly squeezed juice and read the newspaper while I nibble at it. I’ll style my hair, select an amazing outfit that looks like it has fallen out of the pages of Vogue, and sashay out of the flat ten minutes early.

LOL jk…

SOFT GLAM PALETTE | ANASTASIA BEVERLY HILLS REVIEW

OOOH LAWD LOOK WHAT I BOUGHT. LAAWDDD LOOK WHAT’S ABOUT TO MAKE ME STRUGGLE AND SUFFER UNTIL PAYDAY. That’s right, your favourite moron with zero self control is back again with another ill-advised purchase that is set to simultaneously improve and ruin her life. But can you really blame me? Look at this little nugget of heaven and tell me you wouldn’t live off beans on toast if it meant you could own this…? Nah? Just me? Ok.

Well, to be honest: It hasn’t been all ‘OOH’s and ‘AAHHH’s with Anastasia Beverly Hills’ latest offering. It’s been quite the opposite, in fact. For a start, they’re wanting another £43 off you. I get it, I get it. The eyeshadows are super high-quality and amazing, but another palette priced at £43 is starting to get ridiculous. I own three of the four ABH palettes, meaning I’ve already spent WELL over a hundred quid and waaaay more than I should have.

I MADE A HAIR COLOUR CONCOCTION + HERE'S HOW IT TURNED OUT

Hello, I’m Jasmine, and I’m a 22 year old woman who has been having my hair bleached since I was 13, and I STILL HAVEN’T FIGURED OUT HOW TO DO MY OWN ROOTS WITHOUT CAUSING MYSELF SERIOUS EMOTIONAL PAIN AND EMBARRASSMENT. It costs anywhere between £50 and £120 to get the treatment I want at a hair salon. Since moving to London, I haven’t found anyone affordable enough or good enough (let’s not mention the run-in I had with the Bulgarian hair salon last year, or the £280 price quote I had in Shoreditch before Christmas) to bleach my roots for me.

L'OREAL PARADISE EXTATIC MASCARA REVIEW

I think the beauty community may have temporarily lost their collective minds when they all started ranting and raving about the L’Oreal Paradise Extatic Mascara. I hate to whinge about makeup products, especially when I spent my own money on them and had high expectations. But this pretty little rose gold tube of disappointment was popping up all over my Twitter feed and Instagram. It was being hailed as a dupe for some of the more popular high end mascaras. So I parted with £11.99 in Boots, and here’s what I thought when I got it home.

COLOUR FREEDOM + STYLE FREEDOM | NEW DYE SHADES, CREAM BLEACH, DETOX KIT + MORE!*

I tend to get a lotta lotta questions about my hair (even though I think it looks a hot mess usually), and people like to ask what I use to get my various levels of blonde and pastel colours. Knight & Wilson, who make Colour Freedom and Style Freedom products are some of my most used products. They’re cruelty-free, have the most up-to-date and most-wanted shades on the market (in my opinion), and their hair colours actually work. My review of their Metallic Glory Silver Grey Dye is one of my most-read blog posts ever! So when they contacted me and asked if I’d like to review a few new products from their range, I was like “OH, if I must!”.
